Intimacy Essentials
Life without love feels empty. That’s one of those ancient human truths that almost no one can escape. Love doesn’t always mean “sexual love” or even “committed relationships.” We’re talking about far broader arenas: friendship and caring, talking and listening, supporting, sharing, laughing together. People without partners can be content and complete. But people without love live in shadowland.
The deeper the love, the richer — and more difficult — it must be. Certainly love’s challenges and rewards are most pressing when two people love each other bodily, psychologically, and spiritually, under one roof. Drew’s ability to be happy in that high-stakes environment depends basically on her getting two things right: the first is being clear about who she really is and what she really needs in that department. The second lies in simply choosing the right person — and, as many a broken hearted soul will attest, that is far from being the easiest part! In both of those areas, astrology can provide terrific insights. We’ll explore many of them in the pages that follow. We will emphasize the dynamics that arise between lovers, but a lot of what we say also applies (with a little creative translation!) to “lower voltage” human connections, such as friendships, family, even professional partnerships.
The Heart of the Matter
No astrological connection between two people is so inherently dreadful that enough patience, love and determination cannot only make it last, but make it something precious to both of them. At the same time, there is no kind of astrological connection so wonderful that enough selfishness, confusion about sex, or plain immaturity cannot turn it into a nightmare. That’s the heart of the matter, and it underlies every word you are about to read. This isn’t just some squirmy attempt on our parts to escape responsibility for any errors we might make in this reading — it’s a recognition of Drew’s miraculous capacity to love, to live consciously and creatively, and to take responsibility for herself. The power is not in hands of the planets; it’s in her own hands, and we want to honor that.
Still, the planetary patterns at Drew’s birth do reflect certain needs and potential blind spots in her nature. Understanding them can empower her to make better decisions about what — and who — is important to her. We’ll start with an analysis of Drew’s birthchart from a relationship perspective. Then, in the second part of the reading, we’ll focus on what her chart tells us about the nature of her natural partners in this world.
Cutting to the Chase…
Too many books and theories about relationships assume that the same answers work for everybody. And of course that’s not true. Passionate folks need a different kind of relationship than do more detached or laid back ones. Some people are very domestic by nature. Other wither unless they have more breathing room. Our first step then is to explore Drew as a unique person. Who exactly is she, independently and as an individual? Let’s dive right into that question astrologically.
Introduction to Drew’s Intimacy Essentials Astrological Profile
What follows is a thumbnail sketch of Drew, focusing on the parts of her character that are most relevant to questions of sex, love, and intimacy. Later we’ll explore the kind of person with whom she could be happiest in the long run.
The center of the astrological universe is always the Sun. There is a certain set of values and attitudes to which Drew must be true if she is going to be authentically real, psychologically centered, and fully alive. Astrology is a lot more complicated than Sun Signs, but we can never leave them out of the picture. The Sun is what holds the solar system together, and it holds all the different voices in Drew’s psyche together in the same way.
Sun in Pisces
When Drew was born, the Sun was in the Sign Pisces, the Visionary or the Mystic. Drew’s basic sanity and vitality depend upon her frequent and regular immersion in experiences that help her connect to herself as something vaster, more mysterious and far less definable than merely her ego, body or personality. Drew needs to explore states that involve her formlessness and boundarylessness. To dissolve the narrow definitions of the self into something larger. In short, Drew requires a steady diet of altered-state experiences to nourish the Mystic and the Visionary at the core of her her need and capacity to experience other worlds, inner, meditative or creative, as just as real and compelling as the outer world. These experiences should be consciously chosen, calming, and heighten Drew’s awareness–not dull it with escapist or addictive behavior. Drew’s nature is sensitive, compassionate, dreamy, and intuitive, full of mystical or psychic sensibilities. An atheistic, skeptical, totally linear and uncompromisingly pragmatic attitude and lifestyle would be poisonous to her. For a relationship to blossom, committed love must deepen Drew’s sense of the indescribable Mystery of life, not reduce it. In intimacy, Drew’s tendency towards sappiness may present some problems, but they’re insurmountable only in two cases: if Drew has chosen to numb her sensitivity with addictions, or if she has chosen a rigid, judgmental and defensive realist as a mate. Drew’s constant, if unspoken, search for Spirit at the core of everything may seem unworkably Quixotic at times, yet that same search can recognize and honor the soul of her mate and add immeasurably to the enchantment of the relationship.
Sun in 10th House
At the time of Drew’s first breath, the Sun was in the Tenth House, which suggests a quality of drive, work-orientation and ambition in Drew’s character, and underlying that, an authentic sense of some larger destiny. As lofty as this sounds, it’s potentially a touchy subject because, while Drew does need to guard against too much concern with status or perhaps against “workaholism,” we must also respect a few legitimate facts about her: she feeds her spirit by achieving a real sense of purpose in the community, and without it, her sense of identity would be sapped. She also possesses a genuine calling to make something of herself in a worldly sense. This is not mere careerism; it’s something closer to a sense of mission. No one who really loves or even understands Drew is going to be too quick to interpret any of those parts of her character pathologically, in terms of her being “power-hungry” or “shallow.” One unmistakable bottom line is that Drew gets along most easily with other people who have a similarly hardworking orientation. To them, the sacrifices such effort entails seem reasonable and natural. Such folks are not inclined to be judgmental about her lack of some requisite laid-back quality of “humility.” What a less destiny-haunted kind of person might perceive as a neurotic drivenness on Drew’s part, a soul more naturally attuned to her might read as an expression of her sense of her life’s higher purpose.
Moon in Cancer
When Drew was born, the Moon was passing through the sign Cancer, which has always been associated with the drive to nurture and heal, and with a certain spirit of self-protection as well. Consistent with that kind of picture, the mood of Drew’s life is one of real caring, a sensitivity to pain and hurt in herself and others, and an endless fascination with the psychological depths of the mind. Intimate life with such a sensitive soul promises to be a tender experience, warm beyond words, and full of deep affection. Those advantages might be balanced by certain less attractive propensities in Drew of which she may not be fully aware: a certain quality of defensiveness, a penchant for unnecessary worrying, and a certain vulnerability to hiding her own complicated fears or hurt feelings behind nurturing, supportive, “wise” behavior. She doesn’t have to be a living, breathing illustration of all that potentially darker Cancer Moon material — but avoiding it requires that she be willing to see herself reflected in the mirror of love…which is to say that she listens to the observations of those who care about her, and “sheds shells” accordingly.
Moon in 2nd House
The Moon was also in the Second House of the birthchart, an area of astrological symbolism which is associated negatively with self-doubt, and, more positively, with its close cousin, the desire to prove oneself. Drew carries a degree of emotional insecurity which can lead her toward various forms of lunar over-compensation: offering counsel or sympathy where none is really needed, feeding people who aren’t hungry, advising where advice is not appropriate. All the while, she may not be sufficiently expressive of her own legitimate needs and feelings, or even fully aware of them. None of this is graven in stone, and Drew can transform these patterns into something more comfortable for everyone, herself included. The key lies in tuning into her own desires and drives, indulging them a bit more, and thereby developing more accurate empathy regarding what others are really needing.
Introduction to Drew’s Ascendant
Sun and Moon are like head and heart… really elemental, in other words. But there’s a third factor that’s almost as important. It’s the Ascendant, which is simply the Sign that was dawning in the east at the instant a person was born. Quite simply, it represents how you “dawn” on people: it’s your style, the way you present yourself.
Ascendant in Gemini
At the time of Drew’s birth, Gemini was rising, and thus she wears the “Mask of the Storyteller.” As that image implies, there’s a keen, lively, verbal vibration around her, full of intelligence, alertness, and curiosity. The Ascendant works like a colored filter through which the light of the rest of the chart shines, so all Drew’s interior processes and drives are given this quick-witted Geminian spin as they are expressed — clear, free-associative, and not necessarily very emotionally transparent. More than Drew likely realizes, people tend to think of her in intellectual, mental terms. That’s not her actual intention or ultimate nature, but her fluent, funny, fast-paced outward style may create that effect…and the quality of Drew’s intimate life benefits from a little reflection on the price of that phenomenon. At the same time, we need to add that anyone trying to be close to her offers Drew a tender gift by learning to hear what are often soulful heart-revelations behind the occasional seeming glibness of her style.
Introduction to Planets with Special Emphases for Drew
Everybody’s chart contains all the planets, but sometimes a given planet really stands out as definitive for that particular individual…somebody might be like a living, breathing “Mercury,” for example. One of the simplest and most powerful ways a planet can do that is just by being lined up closely with any of the three big factors we’ve looked at already — in “conjunction” with the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant, although conjunctions to the Sun, Moon or Ascendant may not happen in every chart. Another way for a planet to have a particular emphasis is by being “the Ruler of the Ascendant,” which is simply a way of saying that the planet has a special relationship with the Sign that was rising when the person was born. In Drew’s case, here’s what we find:
No planets were aligned with Drew’s Sun.
Moon Conjunct Saturn:
When Drew was born, Saturn aligned with the Moon, adding an inward, intensely private quality to her mood. To be happy, Drew needs serious projects to sink her teeth into. These can be practical, pragmatic things, but for our purposes here, we emphasize the deeply serious “project” of making a relationship work. Drew brings precious qualities of realism, commitment, and maturity to such an endeavor. But, in common with the rest of us, she brings some baggage too — a tendency to withdraw emotionally, some difficulty in simply relaxing, and a certain vulnerability to melancholia. She also has a real yearning for lots of time alone, and that need must be met, or it will exaggerate the three themes we just listed.
No planets were aligned with Drew’s Ascendant.
Introduction to the Ruler of Drew’s Ascendant
Our next step is to consider which planet was RULING the Ascendant.
Mercury rules Drew’s Ascendant
Mercury is the planetary “ruler” of Drew’s Ascendant.
The Ruler of Drew’s Ascendant is in the 9th House
When we look for it in her birthchart, we find it in the Ninth House. That emphasizes a fundamental quality of expansiveness, idealism and philosophy in her outlook, a compelling desire to “do the right thing” — definitely a constructive characteristic in terms of relationships…unless she haunts herself with unreachable, unrealistic romantic dreams and ideals. In general, Drew is someone who legitimately needs a lot of stimulation and variety in life — travel, learning, new possibilities — and appreciates those same curious, expansive, somewhat cosmopolitan qualities in a partner.
Introduction to Drew’s Venus
One cannot talk long about the astrology of love without bumping into the Goddess of Love herself: Venus. There’s an unfortunate tendency to “feminize” Venus, but a casual glance at the birthchart of any man will reveal a startling fact: males have the planet too! Still, Venus is connected with a lot of behaviors that have traditionally been allotted more to women than to men: tenderness, concern with appearance, romantic drives, the urge to make oneself attractive, how we go about the delicate art of “arranging to be caught.”
Venus in Pisces
When Drew was born, Venus was in the Sign Pisces. In affairs of the heart, Drew is sensitive, imaginative and easily moved. Pisces is the Mystic, and with Venus there, Drew responds to a sense of ethereal, intangible connectedness between two spirits, to a quality of relating that goes beyond our more ego or personality-driven definitions of ourselves. In courtship, Attila the Hun and hard-core rationalists need not apply. Drew sees relating as a way to transcend this plane, enter an altered state, and experience both herself and the mate as something beyond how the evening news or the IRS would define the two of them. Nothing kills Drew’s romantic feelings faster than either cynicism or the partner’s attempts to block Drew’s flights of fancy or meditative practice.
Venus in 10th House
Drew’s Venus is also in the Tenth House, which suggests that Drew’s appealing Venusian energies form part of her public identity, which may include a career involving people-smarts or artistic ability. Career is important to her, and a supportive mate won’t be threatened by it. The more that Drew develops Venusian skills–poise, courtesy, warmth, consideration—the more likely she will be to find her ideal niche in the world of work, and the more attractive others will find her. A lower level manifestation of this Venus placement is defining one’s public identity through one’s relationship(s), or relating only to people who might be of professional benefit. Setting boundaries with people whom Drew meets professionally, and separating business and personal connections, are skills that Drew might be wise to acquire. At best, Drew can give just as much support to a mate’s career as she would like to receive. When Drew’s relationship is healthy, it shows, and she can take pride in a relationship so visibly deep that it becomes almost the stuff of legend in her community.
Introduction to Drew’s Mars
If Venus has been overly feminized over the centuries, certainly Mars has been overly masculinized. Here’s the “War God” — a symbol of the heat in your blood, your fire, and your healthy animal desires. It’s passionate and deeply sexual. While Venus represents the tender contact of eyes and hearts, Mars is perhaps centered a little further south in the human anatomy.
Mars in Capricorn
In Drew’s chart, Mars lies in the Sign Capricorn, which really strengthens it. The War God can reach his most comprehensive expression in the Sign of the Strategist…Mars is “exalted” in Capricorn, as the ancient astrologers used to say. Drew wields a large allotment of steady, practically-directed energy, and her desires tend to be earthy and sustained. Mars in Capricorn wants results, detests appearing undignified, and is capable of waiting for the right person to come along, so Drew can seem reserved until she is reasonably confident about a partner’s response. Self-control, responsibility, and a stiff upper lip are among Drew’s strong suits, so she may sometimes have to make an effort to communicate her real emotions, particularly if feeling needy, angry or let down. Drew’s sexual force may be slow to awaken, but once started it is vigorous and enduring. The greater the trust in the partner and in the relationship, the more Drew can tap into her deep store of passion.
Mars in 8th House
Drew’s Mars is also in the Eighth House, where its fiery energy becomes associated with Drew’s sexual style and psychological nature. If she is reasonably honest and courageous about her own inner realities, she is a passionate, intense, hungry creature, full of the need for shared emotional experience and shared emotional release. The simple urge for sexual pleasure is perhaps stronger here than in other people, but the point is really larger than that: Drew’s drive is for “grand passion,” and that is every bit as much a psychological process as a physical one. If she understands that, then the mating process becomes one of almost frightening honesty and emotional nakedness. If she missed the point, then she would imagine the drive to be more narrowly physical than it ultimately is, never be satisfied, and as a result probably get rather nasty about it.
Introduction to Drew’s 7th House
Classically, the Seventh House of the birthchart is called “The House of Marriage.” Any planet or planets that happen to be there give us insight into the natures of our most comfortable partners and friends in life — a subject we’ll explore quite deeply a little later on in the reading. They also tell us something very significant about what we need to learn and where we need to grow if our intimate life isn’t going to read like a gossip column — or the obituaries!
No Planets in the 7th House
In Drew’s case, there are no planets in the Seventh House, so we need to look elsewhere in her chart for relationship clues. And don’t worry — they’re abundant.
Introduction to Drew’s 8th House
Everybody older than twelve knows the meaning of the words “chemistry” and “electricity” in the context of sexual attraction. But those words are notoriously difficult to define or predict. We’ve all been attracted to people who practically had “Dumb Choice” written all over them, but there was “just something about those eyes…” Sometimes of course that’s a signal to catch the next shuttle for Alpha Centauri. But other times it’s a reminder that, as sexual beings, we are inheritors of an ancient and mysterious biological legacy. While we shouldn’t let it totally run our lives, a relationship that lacks compelling passion might not have the “oomph” to get through those inevitable threadbare patches on the road of love. Astrologically, these sexy, confusing matters are reflected in the Eighth House of the birthchart. It describes your “natural lover” — a notion we’ll investigate in detail later on. It also describes the qualities Drew must develop in herself in order fully to inhabit her primordial, instinctual sexuality.
Mars in 8th House
In Drew’s chart, the red eye of Mars gleams in the Eighth House. That turns up the volume on passion, but it’s so important that we looked at it a couple of paragraphs back, so we don’t need to go into it again here.
Introduction to Drew’s Natural Mate
Read enough of those paperbacks about “How to Find the Perfect Relationship,” and you might get the idea that if only you could find somebody who’d underlined all the same passages in the book, you’d live happily ever after. But there’s something ancient and wise inside all of us that knows better. The “right person” isn’t just some walking statistic who agrees with you in every way — how boring! Choosing a mate is lot more complicated than that. Many dimensions of our psyches — not to mention our bodies — are involved in making the right choice. We’ve already investigated some of the more enigmatic pieces of that puzzle under the headings of “chemistry” and “electricity.” But there’s an even deeper mystery here.
Look at any happy, long-lasting relationship. Consider the birthchart of either of the people involved. If you know even a little astrology, you’ll make a fascinating discovery: that chart describes not only the person whose chart it is, but the partner as well! It’s really pretty amazing — while you’re lying there in your cradle, your chart already describes the individual with whom you may be sharing a big piece of your life, often in eerie detail. That may be somebody who’s not even born yet!
Our next step in this analysis is to consider what information Drew’s birthchart provides about her natural mate.
Before we start, two comments: “perfect fits” are just as rare in the relationship department as they are in a shoe store — and, like shoes, a little wear often makes them a lot more comfortable!
The second comment is that what we ask for in a mate is always complex, and often contradictory — we might spend a long time looking for the perfect “introverted extravert,” for example. That brings us back to the scarcity of “perfect fits.” In the pages that follow, we are going to try to bring some order into this psychologically chaotic question by dividing up Drew’s various needs into a lot of different areas. What turns her on erotically in a person may be different than what allows her to relax and be herself. What entertains her may be different than what she instinctively trusts. All those are legitimate desires, of course. Which ones Drew might be most willing to compromise depends on who she is. Earlier, we offered some insights into basic needs Drew just can’t sacrifice. As we move forward into thinking about the character of Drew’s natural partner, our first step is to consider the simple question of…
What Kind of Person Drew Likes
Certain kinds of people simply fit Drew’s style of living, thinking, and being, regardless of their genders — folks who would make good roommates for her, let’s say. That may not be the most exciting idea in the world, but it’s absolutely essential to any two people sharing life sanely and harmoniously, without their emotional circuits frying. Astrologically, the Seventh House — the traditional House of Marriage — gives us lots of insight into the kinds of people with whom we simply tend to get along. One way of exploring this House is to consider which planet “rules its cusp.
Drew’s Natural Mate Described by Drew’s Sagittarius 7th House Cusp
At the moment of Drew’s birth, Gemini was rising, as we saw earlier. That means that the opposite Sign, Sagittarius, was on the western horizon — and that’s the Seventh House cusp. Now, Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, which symbolizes expansiveness, hope, and optimism, suggesting that the people with whom Drew can form the most lasting, stable relationships are positive, supportive creatures, very capable of sussing out any bright possibilities inherent in the “big picture.” That balances her Geminian vulnerability toward loss of perspective, getting lost in details and distractions, and generally running around in circles. We are not talking about total airheaded “positive thinking” types here, but rather about people with a healthy sense of what could be — a willingness to dream, a skill at speculation, and a fine sense of the right moment to bet the house. Drew needs people who balance her that way, helping her to sit back and take in the larger picture, and thereby to take better advantage of real strategic opportunities. Differences of perspective, even arguments, may arise and press Drew’s “too talkative” button from time to time in minor ways; that’s just static on the line. There is, however, one emotional hair-trigger for Drew: a lack of respect for her absolute fidelity to seeking the facts, and through them, the truth. Any such failure kills affection faster than a lizard kills a gnat. And that, above all, is why these philosophical, high-minded Sagittarian qualities are such an essential aspect of the character of any of Drew’s natural soulmates, and why it’s worth putting up with the occasional differences that go along with them.
No Planets in the 7th House
When Drew was born, there were no planets actually located in the “House of Marriage.” This doesn’t mean that relationship questions are unimportant to Drew, only that we’d better pay more attention to the material that follows.
Ah, but there is more to love than merely “liking” each other! What about…
Romance
Here we’re not exactly talking about sex — don’t worry, that’s next! — but something less definable and just as important: romance. Maybe a better way to put it is that without the delightfully mysterious entanglement we call “romance,” sex usually doesn’t interest us for very long. We’re getting at some feelings here that are tough to put into precise words, but which loom large in the human heart (and human birthchart!): feelings of fondness and affection, feelings that make our insides fluttery and warm. What kind of person might inspire Drew to “climb the highest mountain, cross the widest sea?” Or, to put it very simply, who strikes her as “cute?” Unsurprisingly, Venus plays a big part in shaping such romantic responses.
Venus in Pisces Applied to Drew’s Natural Mate
When Drew was born, the “Goddess of Love” was in Pisces the Fish. So, does Drew have a thing for folks with gills? Or who like to swim? Well, the latter point is actually fairly close to the mark, except that the waters into which the Piscean fish dives are the bottomless waters of consciousness itself. Thus, the kinds of people who stimulate Drew romantically and erotically are ones who can make that deep dive with her. They are the natural mystics of the world, the visionary poets, the symbol-readers and dream-interpreters, the fantasy-weavers, the great “imaginers” of the community. Many times they manifest as artists. It’s not unusual to see them drawn to religion or depth psychology. For Drew, the single most essential aspect of romantic love is the sharing of consciousness — quiet time, full of easy eye contact, and a soulful sense of tides of unverbalized understanding flowing between her and her partner. Her natural lover understands those pleasant human mysteries, and shares those same ancient, elusive motivations.
Venus in 10th House Applied to Drew’s Natural Mate
When Drew was born, Venus was in the Tenth House, revealing to us that Drew responds romantically to qualities of ambition, public visibility, and a sense of destiny in a partner. Traditionally the “House of Career,” the Tenth House actually refers to almost everything that impacts the way we look to people who don’t know us very well but have heard of us: our social role, where we live, our crowd, our hobbies, etc., as well as our work. For Drew, a natural partner is someone who happens to have a lot of motivation in those territories. A social climber? Someone with blind ambition? It could be misleading to rule out those qualities, but we must also consider a loftier perspective: some of us are wired in such a way that we will affect the destinies of people we don’t know — that we will affect the myths and symbols of our communities, in other words. Drew’s natural mate happens to be one of those individuals.
Drew’s romantic profile is a little more complicated due to a critical planetary alignment.
Venus conjunct Jupiter applied to Drew’s Natural Mate
Drew’s Venus was conjunct Jupiter, so we know that Drew’s natural partner is a “jovial” type. That’s one of those old astrological terms that’s seeped into modern usage. As usual when that happens, something is lost in the translation. Certainly, someone who is a suitable match for Drew is “jovial” in the conventional sense of that word — jolly, big-spirited, and inclined to think optimistically and positively. But such an individual is also generous and supportive, much inclined simply to believe in Drew and help her realize her dreams. It’s not unusual for Jupiter-people to be “lucky,” although some of what might look like “luck” from the outside is better understood as the fruit of simply believing in oneself and going for the gold — a quality that abounds in Drew’s natural partner, and which such a person will also offer Drew herself as a gift. On the downside, when Jupiter energy is central in a person’s makeup, there’s a tendency to over-extend — and perhaps to over-indulge.
Introduction to 5th House Applied to Drew’s Natural Mate
Romantic feelings are closely tied to the Fifth House of the chart as well. That’s the traditional House of “Love Affairs,” and has a lot to do with all the sassy, funny, sexy energies that keep the sparkle in people’s eyes. As with the Seventh House, we learn a lot about the Fifth by considering the planet that “rules” its cusp.
5th House Cusp Scorpio Applied to Drew’s Natural Mate
When Drew was born, Scorpio was on the cusp of the Fifth House, which makes Pluto its planetary ruler. For Drew to feel loose and at ease with the spontaneous expression of her sexuality, it helps her a lot to have a partner who is passionate, unabashed, and psychologically intense. Drew brings those kinds of energies to bed, and she is gratified a lot if she is met in kind. To state it simply, a frank, open ease about our natural interest in each other’s genitals is a big piece of it. But, even more importantly, there is the matter of the eyes: Drew’s natural lover is not afraid of deep, eyeball-to-eyeball soul-contact either.
Drew’s Natural Mate Described by Uranus in 5th House
When Drew was born, Uranus was in the Fifth House, which really amplifies the astrological importance of innovation, independence, and the need for individual choice in love. Drew wants to be seen and treated as a unique human being, not according to any formula or preconceived notions whatsoever, and is quite willing to give her partner that same consideration. Drew’s natural lover is a free spirit, a non-conforming soul, someone for whom a relationship helps each partner become more truly him or herself. A place where no one has to obey society’s written and unwritten rules for relating without questioning them first. Such a person is distinctive and original, has a strong sense of his or her own identity, doesn’t follow any scripts, wants a lot of “space” and tends to give a lot of space to the partner, too.
More is happening in Drew’s Fifth House, which tells us that this playful, even flirtatious, courtship behavior is a big area for her. “Falling in love” may work more easily here than “staying in love,” but that’s not nearly as bad as it sounds — falling in love can take a long, long time.
Drew’s Natural Mate Described by Pluto in 5th House
When Drew was born, Pluto was in the Fifth House, which really amplifies the astrological importance of emotional and psychological depth, perceptiveness, and the instinctual side of relating. Drew wants a great deal of intensity, honesty and realness in a partner, as well as an aptitude for personal growth through fearless self-analysis. Fortunately, Drew is always willing to go deeper, too. Her natural lover is someone who feels that time is well spent exploring some of the more taboo areas of life–sexuality, death and dying, the occult, the deep unconscious. Someone who’s not afraid to speak his or her mind. Someone who will initiate a difficult intimate conversation, if the cost of not doing so is that the relationship becomes shallow or stilted. A quality of passion, about almost everything, is much in evidence with such a person.
Introduction to 8th House Applied to Drew’s Natural Mate
Now for the PG portion of our program…
If not absolutely essential to happiness in a relationship, great sex is at the very least a tremendous assistance to it. They don’t call it “making” love for nothing! Around our twelfth birthdays, give or take a couple of years, most of begin to learn exactly how easy it is to trigger those kinds of hot, aroused feelings — and within a few more years we’ve learned a far more baffling lesson: that they are very difficult to sustain, at least in the context of a long-term monogamous relationship. Whimsical passions are easily found, but what we are about to explore is that much rarer jewel, sustainable passion.
Keeping the heat turned on! Some people don’t even believe it’s possible — that you inevitably “get over it” and soon settle down to the far more sober realities of arguing over whose turn it is to carry out the garbage. Cynics! Astrology teaches us that sexual energy between two people is in fact sustainable, and that while part of the answer lies inside ourselves (see what we wrote about Drew’s “chemistry” and “electricity” themes earlier in this reading), a significant part of keeping sex alive depends on simply choosing our “natural lover” — a person in whom all the ancient, eternal archetypes of mating and bonding are focused for us. Astrologically, the Eighth House holds these secrets, and one way of unraveling them is to learn which planet “rules its cusp.”
8th House Cusp Capricorn Applied to Drew’s Natural Mate
In Drew’s birthchart, Capricorn is on the Eighth House cusp, which puts Saturn in authority as House-ruler. That’s the “Wizard” or the “Elder,” so the configuration is charged with seriousness, high purpose, and solemn vows undertaken in a sober spirit. This is not as depressing as it might sound! In fact, there isn’t much in this world that’s more depressing than disposable “intimate promises” made frivolously — a kind of glib duplicity is absolutely counter to the spirit of Saturn. We all get whimsically attracted to silly people from time to time, but for Drew, reasonableness, realism, maturity, and the ability simply to keep one’s word are essential qualities in the kind of sexual partner with whom there is a future. Only with that grounded attitude of clear-headed commitment and sober devotion to the task of making a relationship work in the real world can Drew open up the deepest, most primal dimensions of her passion, which is intensely focused, erotically skilled, and deliciously patient when it finally feels safe enough to emerge.
Drew’s Natural Mate Described by Mars in 8th House
At Drew’s birth, Mars dominated the Eighth House. We put that under the microscope for Drew personally a few pages ago. Now let’s consider what it adds to our characterization of her natural lover. Mars is the Warrior, so anyone who is likely to hold a lasting erotic fascination for Drew will have a warrior’s nature — lots of passionate intensity, an appreciation of directness, healthy physical appetites. Above all, such an individual is willing to risk peace for the sake of truth. That’s not an easy way to get along, but it does breed depth and lasting passion between people, and is good antidote to the sleepiness of love grown perhaps too comfortable and predictable…the latter conditions being perhaps the most frightening notions in the world to the sort of human being who is wired to share Drew’s bed for the long haul.
The plot thickens, which lets us know that maintaining a deep erotic attunement to each other is a particular imperative for Drew.
The Moon as it refers to Drew’s Natural Mate
Finally, we come right down the roots of the matter. Romance, partnership, terrific sex — when they work their magic on us, they are like three rivers flowing into what is perhaps the most basic and ancient of all human institutions: a sense of home. After a while, given hard work and the Grace of God, couples may come to a place where they can “take each other for granted” — in a very pleasant sense of that phrase! No one is going to leave, trust and commitment are total, and (blessedly!) time spent “working on the relationship” diminishes. Astrologically, these deep feelings of comfort and familiarity are represented by the Moon. We’ve already considered it from other perspectives, but now, with
The Moon in Cancer describing Drew’s Natural Mate
Drew’s Moon in Cancer, we can see what light it sheds on this most ancient of human institutions: clan, home, and roots. Cancer is deeply committed to these very things, so, for Drew to be happy, she really benefits a lot from a stable domestic life with all its simple pleasures. Regardless of appearances, she is also not the sort of person who really opens up her vulnerable side very easily — and we are never so emotionally vulnerable as when we risk everything to commit our lives to a partnership, form a home together, maybe have children. It follows that Drew’s natural life-mate is someone who honors home and hearth as deeply as she does, and commits to it without undue angst. Such a person finds sexual monogamy less of a challenge than many people do, senses the deep, authentic spirituality of home life, and probably has a set of nurturing instincts that manifest as some combination of qualities from the following menu: the precious and unusual skill of knowing how to make a room truly comfortable, a strong desire for children and a sense of how to live with them, a taste for quiet evenings, co-dependency with the family cat or dog, or skill as a cook.
Another piece of the puzzle when it comes to these feelings of having deep roots together is the Fourth House — the traditional “House of the Home.” One way of getting perspective on this part of the chart is to discover which planet rules its cusp.
4th House Cusp Leo Applied to Drew’s Natural Mate
At the moment of Drew’s birth, Leo was on the Fourth House cusp, which makes the Sun its ruler. The Sun is the center of the solar system and, in a sense, its “king.” Free-associating, we might arrive at images of “castles,” “thrones,” “crowns,” and “royal courts.” Those pictures in turn tell us a lot about what it takes to keep Drew feeling truly and absolutely committed to a home: a partner whose nature is open to a certain grandness, one for whom a taste for the lavish or the extravagant is not to be despised. This doesn’t mean an egomaniac, or a tacky person. Instead, it refers to a sense of rising above pettiness, of living well and in the present tense — and of creating a mood around the home in which both Drew and her partner have the FEELING of being “royalty” sitting on their golden thrones…even it’s really a wicker sofa. Here’s a tale that says it all: Two men were stuck at anchor on a sailboat, unable to leave because of high winds and waves. They had several bottles of wine, one of which was a very fine vintage bottle. The owner insisted they open the best one right away. His friend wondered about maybe saving it for a special occasion. The owner said no, that he always drank the best bottle he had, no matter what. Questioned about that, he responded, “That way, I know I am always drinking the best.” That’s the kind of energy Drew needs in a hearth-mate.
